"Tasks" list in the "Make" section is a detailed and prioritized task list for each Resource. Resource can be a workstation (e.g. Cutting table, Assembly machine) or a person (e.g. John), for example, that can be assigned to be responsible for a specific Production Operation. Katana creates task lists for your Resources based on open Manufacturing Orders.

To manage tasks for Resources, you need to define Production Operations and Resources for your products. Then, you can use the "Tasks" list in the "Make" screen and track the production process in detail.

Production Operations and Resources

For each product, you can define Production Operations (i.e. specific production steps that need to be completed to produce the product). Read more about creating Production Operations.

In the Production Operations section of the product card, you can assign a Resource to each Operation step. Resources can be workstations (e.g. Cutting machine, Mixing machine, Quality Control area) or employees (e.g. Employee 1, Jane Doe). This then enables managing the task list for each Resource in the "Tasks" list in the "Make" screen.

When you create a new Manufacturing Order for a product, Resources are assigned to each Production Operation automatically based on your setup in Production Operations for the product. Resources can be edited on each Manufacturing Order if needed.

Tasks list

The "Tasks" list in the "Make" screen groups all Production Operations that are related to open Manufacturing Orders by Resource.

Resources can be deleted and reordered in Settings -> Resources.

Priority of tasks

Tasks are listed by priority. This priority matches the priority of underlying Manufacturing Orders, which can be changed in the "Schedule" view in the "Make" section (read more). You cannot change the priority of single tasks in the "Tasks" list.

Status of Production Operations

You can change and track the status of each Production Operation. Read more about managing Production Operation statuses.

Examples

Example 1

Use case:

In my workshop, each step of the production process is done by a specific workstation. I need to assign production operations to each workstation.

Solution:

For Product X, I have defined the following production operations: cutting, sewing, packaging. In the Production Operations page for Product X, I assign Workstation 1 to Cutting, Workstation 2 to Sewing and Workstation 3 to Packaging.

For Product Y, I have defined the following Production Operations: cutting, gluing, quality control, packaging. In the Production Operations page for Product Y, I assign Workstation 1 to Cutting, Workstation 4 to Gluing, Workstation 5 to Quality Control and Workstation 3 to Packaging.

When I create Manufacturing Orders for Product X and Y, I do not need to edit any Resources on Manufacturing Orders as the same operations are always completed by the same workstations.

I can use the "Tasks" view as a task list for my workstations.

Example 2

Use case

In my workshop, one employee typically makes the product from start to finish. I have more than one employee who can make the same product. I want to assign the whole Manufacturing Order to a certain employee after creating the MO.

Solution

For Product X, I have defined the following Production Operations: cutting, sewing, packaging. In the Production Operations page for Product X, I will not assign any Resources to any Operations as there is no default assignee. I wish to assign a Resource after the Manufacturing Order has been created.

For Product Y, I have defined the following Production Operations: cutting, gluing, quality control, packaging. In the Production Operations page for Product Y, again, I will not assign any Resources to any Operations as there is no default assignee. I wish to assign a Resource after the Manufacturing Order has been created.

When I create a Manufacturing Order for Product X or Y, I will click on the Manufacturing Order and assign a Resource to defined Operations. I will assign the same Resource (employee) to every operation step on the MO as one employee completes the production of the product from start to finish.
