What is a material?
Materials are items that you use in manufacturing your products. Creating a material enables you to add it to product recipes, include it in purchase orders and keep track of its inventory levels.
Note: Do not confuse materials with sub-assemblies: both are used in product recipes but sub-assemblies are items produced in your own factory and classified under products in Katana, while materials are purchased directly from suppliers.
Materials are purchased directly from suppliers and do not have product features like product recipe or production operations.
One material can have multiple variants (e.g. color, size). If multiple variants are not enabled for a material, then the material is considered to have a single variant. Read more about variants.
A material card also includes a variant code. If multiple variants are not enabled, then there is only a single variant code. If a material has multiple variants, then each variant can have a unique code.
Example materials: table leg, table top.
Note that the variant attributes (e.g. color, size, type) are not included in the material name. We recommend using our variants feature.
