Custom items are products or services added directly to a Shopify sales order that don’t exist in the Shopify product catalog.

When syncing Shopify with Katana, you can choose whether or not these custom items should be imported.

Import options

1. Import custom items (ON)

  • Every custom item on a Shopify sales order is imported into Katana.

  • A new product (or service) is created for each custom item.

  • Custom items are not matched with existing items in Katana — they always create a new record.

  • If a custom item is non-physical, you can decide to import it as either a service or a product in Katana.

2. Do not import custom items (OFF)

  • Custom items on Shopify sales orders are not imported into Katana.

  • These items will not appear on sales orders synced from Shopify.

Things to keep in mind

  • Custom items are one-way: they’re created in Katana from Shopify orders but don’t sync back to Shopify.

  • Turning import ON is useful if you regularly use ad-hoc or service-based items on Shopify orders.

  • Turning import OFF is better if you want to keep Katana’s item list clean and only manage structured product data.
