How to connect Katana to Claude (MCP)

Find out how to connect Katana to Claude (including Claude Desktop).

Written by David Lorbiecke

Claude is an AI assistant built by Anthropic. Connecting it to Katana lets you check stock, look up orders, and create or update records from a chat window, using your live Katana data.

Before you start

Before you start, make sure this is ready:

In Claude

  • A Claude account. Custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. On Free, you can have one custom connector at a time.

  • On Team and Enterprise, an organization owner has to add Katana for the workspace. Members can't add a custom connector themselves.

In Katana

  • An active Katana account with the Access to MCP permission enabled.

    • Account owners have it by default. For everyone else, an owner or a user with Manage users and permissions enables it: profile menu (top right) → Team → the user's name → Admin tab → check Access to MCP.

      • If your permission was just changed, refresh your Katana session before connecting.

      • No API key necessary, sign in with your normal Katana login

What the connection can do

Access to MCP is not limited by a user's other Katana permissions. Once it's on, the connected AI can read, create and update records across the account.

It can't delete anything. Read, create and update only. Deleting stays in Katana, with you.

Steps to connect

On Free, Pro, or Max (Claude)

  1. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors, then click + Add custom connector.

  2. Name it Katana, paste https://mcp.katanamrp.com as the server URL, leave Advanced settings closed, and click Add. Claude shows its standard notice about third-party connectors. That appears for every custom connector.

  3. Once added, click Connect in Claude, and a sign-in page opens. Sign in to Katana, approve the connection.

  4. You’ll be redirected to Claude, showing Katana MCP connected.

On Team or Enterprise (Claude)

  1. An organization owner opens Organization settings → Connectors, clicks Add, hovers over Custom and selects Web.

  2. Name it Katana and paste https://mcp.katanamrp.com as the server URL.

  3. Each member then opens Customize → Connectors, finds Katana and clicks Connect, signing in with their own Katana account. Every member needs Access to MCP on their own Katana user.

You'll know it worked when Katana shows Connected in your connector list.

Try your first prompt

Open a new chat. Existing chats don't pick up new connectors. Then ask something you'd normally have to click through Katana for:

"Which bins hold SKU-1042, and what's in bin A-03-01 right now?"

You'll see Claude call Katana's tools and answer from your live data. You can turn individual tools on and off for a conversation from the Search and tools menu.

Staying in control

  • Ask it to show you the change first. Before you approve anything, ask Claude to summarize exactly what it's about to do. Check the products, quantities, prices, customers, suppliers, locations and statuses.

  • Verify in Katana. The AI is working from your live data, but it can still get something wrong. Check anything operational in Katana before you act on it.

  • Keep jobs scoped. Chat works best on a specific job: one order, one product line, this week. Loading a whole catalog is a job for Assisted import, not chat.

  • Katana only sends the data your question needs, and it goes to the AI provider you chose, under their terms.

Troubleshooting

Problem

What to do

The connector won't save

Check the URL is exactly https://mcp.katanamrp.com, with no trailing slash. On the Free plan, only one custom connector can be active at a time.

The sign-in window didn't open, or it didn't bring me back

Allow pop-ups for claude.ai, then open the Katana connector and choose Reconnect. If you signed in with the wrong Katana account, sign out of Katana first, then reconnect.

Katana is connected, but no tools appear in chat

Start a new chat. Existing chats don't pick up new connectors. Then check the Search and tools menu and refresh.

I get an MCP access error when signing in

Your Katana user doesn't have Access to MCP. Ask your account owner to enable it, then refresh your Katana session.

I'm on Team or Enterprise and can't add the connector

Members can't add custom connectors. Ask an organization owner to add it under Organization settings → Connectors.

Disconnecting Katana

Open Customize → Connectors, find Katana, and click Remove (or the three dots next to it → Remove). That revokes access immediately.

To stop someone from reconnecting through Claude or any other MCP client, also uncheck Access to MCP on their Katana user.
