Exporting product recipes, also known as Bills of Materials (BOMs), from Katana allows you to analyze, update, and manage your manufacturing components efficiently. By exporting these recipes to a spreadsheet, you can make bulk edits and re-import them to streamline your production processes.
How to export product recipes
Navigate to the Items screen
Go to the Items screen in Katana.
Select products
Choose the products for which you want to export the product recipes.
Click the export icon
Click on the export icon located at the top right of the screen.
Choose export format
From the dropdown menu, select either Recipes/BOMs.xlsx or Recipes/BOMs.csv depending on your preferred file format.
The exported file will contain detailed information about the selected product recipes, which you can then edit as needed.
Editing and re-importing product recipes
After exporting, you can make bulk changes to your product recipes in the spreadsheet. Once you've made the necessary edits:
Save the file
Ensure the file is saved in
.xlsx
or.csv
format.
Import the updated recipes
Go to Settings > Data import in Katana.
Under Add new product recipes / BOMs, click Upload data.
Select your updated file for import.
Choose import options
Decide whether to replace existing product recipes or add ingredients from the imported file to existing recipes.
Review and confirm
Katana will validate the file and highlight any errors.
If issues are found, correct them in the template and re-upload.

Additional tips when importing
Existing items only: Ensure all products and ingredients in your spreadsheet already exist in Katana. The import process cannot create new items.
Mandatory fields: Include
Product variant code / SKU
,Ingredient variant code / SKU
, andQuantity
in your spreadsheet.Optional fields:
Product variant name
andIngredient variant name
are for reference only and are not imported into Katana.Multiple ingredients: For products with multiple ingredients, create separate rows for each ingredient, repeating the
Product variant code / SKU
as needed.Notes: Any notes added will appear in the respective field for each ingredient in the product recipe.
Unit of measure: This is set on the item card in Katana and cannot be defined via the import template.
