Understand how your BigCommerce tax settings impact the default sales prices of products imported into Katana.
Katana pricing logic
In Katana, default sales prices (on product cards) are always recorded without tax.
Taxes are only applied when products are added to sales orders (SOs).
BigCommerce tax settings
In BigCommerce, you can configure whether product prices include taxes:
Prices entered with tax
Yes: product prices include tax.
No: product prices exclude tax.
You can check this setting in BigCommerce > Settings > Tax > Store tax settings.
How imports work
When products are imported from BigCommerce, you can include a % tax for VAT/GST:
If a percentage is added
Katana will use this default tax rate during import.
It removes tax from BigCommerce prices to calculate the tax-exclusive sales price in Katana.
If no percentage is added
Katana ignores the tax rate field.
The product’s sales price is imported as-is, since it’s already tax-exclusive.
Note: SOs imported from BigCommerce will always keep the exact price shown in BigCommerce, even if it differs from the default sales price stored in Katana.
Examples
Example 1: Prices entered with % tax
BigCommerce setting: Prices entered with tax = Yes
Product price in BigCommerce: $100 (tax included)
Default tax rate: 20% VAT/GST
Katana default sales price: $83.33 (calculated as 100 ÷ 1.20)
Example 2: Prices entered without % tax
BigCommerce setting: Prices entered with tax = No
Product price in BigCommerce: $100 (tax excluded)
Katana default sales price: $100
With the correct setup, Katana ensures your product prices are always stored tax-exclusive, while SOs reflect the prices as they appear in BigCommerce.
