Define initial product costs when importing stock from Shopify into Katana.
What gets imported from Shopify
When you connect your Shopify store to Katana, you can import:
Product names
Variants
SKUs
Sales prices
Stock levels
Katana does not import Shopify’s “Cost per item.”
Setting initial costs during import
Because cost data isn’t pulled from Shopify, Katana asks you to define an initial cost as a percentage of the sales price.
The same percentage applies to all imported products.
This gives you a quick approximation, which you can later refine.
Formula: Initial Cost = Sales Price (tax-exclusive) × Defined %
Adjusting costs after import
You can update costs for individual products in two ways:
Edit the Stock Adjustment created at import
Go to Stock screen > Stock adjustments tab
Find the import adjustment record
Edit the Cost per unit column
Update in bulk using a template
Use the Update stock levels and safety stock levels template
Upload corrected cost values for multiple products at once
Important notes
The initial cost determines the Average cost in the Inventory tab.
The Cost column in the Items screen will remain 0 until a product has:
A defined Product recipe and/or
Defined Production operations
Products manufactured in Katana will use manufacturing cost (recipe + operations) for cost tracking.
Examples
Scenario A: Shopify store with “Taxes included”
Shopify price: $100 (tax included)
Tax rate: 20% VAT
Katana default sales price: $83.33 (100 ÷ 1.2)
Cost %: 80% → $66.66 (0.8 × 83.33)
Scenario B: Shopify store with “Taxes excluded”
Shopify price: $100 (tax excluded)
Katana default sales price: $100
Cost %: 60% → $60 (0.6 × 100)
