Converting batch tracking to serial number tracking?

Changing the type tracking from batch to serial

Currently, Katana does not allow switching directly between batch and serial number tracking for the same item. Additionally, you can’t use both tracking types simultaneously. However, there are workarounds you can follow:


Workaround 1: Create a new Item for serial tracking

  1. Navigate to Items screen and create a new item.

  2. Set up the new product or material.

  3. In the Product tracking section, enable Serial numbers tracking.

  4. Save the item, and it will now use serial tracking moving forward.


Workaround 2: Reset tracking type on an existing item

  1. Open the existing item with batch tracking enabled.

  2. In Product tracking, change to No tracking.

    • Warning: This action will delete all batch data for each variant of the item.

  3. After disabling batch tracking, immediately enable Serial number tracking.

    • Warning: Enabling serial tracking now will also erase any existing serial data if previously enabled.


Things to watch out for

  • Deleting tracking data: Turning off batch tracking removes all batch histories for that item and its variants. Enable serial afterward to start with fresh tracking.

  • No dual tracking: You must choose either batch or serial for a given item, not both.
