Serial number tracking assigns a unique identifier to each individual finished product, ensuring full traceability from production to sale.
This feature requires the Full Traceability add-on (standard in Professional plans).
What can you do after enabling
Track each unit individually, including its entire movement history.
Apply tracking to all variants of a product automatically.
Automatically generate serial numbers using a specified format, such as:
{ORDER_NO}-{SEQ_START}-ABC123
How to enable serial number tracking
Open the Items screen and select a finished product.
In the product’s Product tracking section, choose Serial numbers.
If you also manufacture this product (i.e. Make is selected), you can define an automatic serial format:
(Optional) Uncheck "Automatically generate MO serial numbers" to enter serials manually.
Limits & important notes
Only final products (finished goods) support serial tracking.
Once enabled, all variants inherit serial tracking.
If you disable serial tracking later, all serial data will be deleted for that item and its variants.
Where serial numbers appear
Manufacturing orders: A Traceability tab appears to enter or generate serials.
Purchase orders / OPOs: Katana prompts you to assign serials upon receiving products.
Sales orders:
Make-to-Order: Serials are auto-assigned.
Make-to-Stock: Choose serials manually at packing or delivery.
