Serial number tracking assigns a unique identifier to each individual finished product, ensuring full traceability from production to sale.
This feature requires the Full Traceability add-on (included in Professional plans).
What can you do after enabling
- Track each unit individually, including its entire movement history.
- Apply tracking to all variants of a product automatically.
- Automatically generate serial numbers using a specified format, such as:
 - {ORDER_NO}-{SEQ_START}-ABC123
How to enable serial number tracking
- Open the Items screen and select a finished product.
- In the product’s Product tracking section, choose Serial numbers.
- If you also manufacture this product (i.e. Make is selected), you can define an automatic serial format:
- (Optional) Uncheck "Automatically generate MO serial numbers" to enter serials manually.
Limits & important notes
- Only final products (finished goods) support serial tracking.
- Once enabled, all variants inherit serial tracking.
- If you disable serial tracking later, all serial data will be deleted for that item and its variants.
Where serial numbers appear
- Manufacturing orders: A Traceability tab appears to enter or generate serials.
- Purchase orders / OPOs: Katana prompts you to assign serials upon receiving products.
- Sales orders: - Make-to-Order: Serials are auto-assigned.
- Make-to-Stock: Choose serials manually at packing or delivery.
