Serial number tracking assigns a unique identifier to each individual finished product, ensuring full traceability from production to sale.

This feature requires the Full Traceability add-on (standard in Professional plans).

What can you do after enabling

  • Track each unit individually, including its entire movement history.

  • Apply tracking to all variants of a product automatically.

  • Automatically generate serial numbers using a specified format, such as:
    {ORDER_NO}-{SEQ_START}-ABC123

How to enable serial number tracking

  1. Open the Items screen and select a finished product.

  2. In the product’s Product tracking section, choose Serial numbers.

  3. If you also manufacture this product (i.e. Make is selected), you can define an automatic serial format:

    • Use {ORDER_NO} to include the MO number

    • Use {SEQ_START} to begin a numbered sequence

    • Add custom numbers, letters, or separators

  4. (Optional) Uncheck "Automatically generate MO serial numbers" to enter serials manually.

Limits & important notes

  • Only final products (finished goods) support serial tracking.

  • Once enabled, all variants inherit serial tracking.

  • If you disable serial tracking later, all serial data will be deleted for that item and its variants.

Where serial numbers appear

  • Manufacturing orders: A Traceability tab appears to enter or generate serials.

  • Purchase orders / OPOs: Katana prompts you to assign serials upon receiving products.

  • Sales orders:

    • Make-to-Order: Serials are auto-assigned.

    • Make-to-Stock: Choose serials manually at packing or delivery.
