Importing production operations via spreadsheet is an efficient way to manage large volumes of data in Katana. This process is ideal for setting up or updating operations across multiple products.

You can also use the bulk data import functionality to update existing default production operations in Katana.

Step-by-step guide

1. Download the import template

  • Navigate to Settings > Data Import > Add new product operations.

  • Click Download template to obtain the Excel (.xls or .xlsx) file.

2. Fill in the template

  • Open the downloaded file.

  • Refer to the "Instructions" sheet for guidance on each column.

  • Enter your production operation data in the "Operations" sheet.

Key fields:

  • Product variant code / SKU (required): Must match an existing product in Katana.

  • Product operation name (required): Define the operation step.

  • Resource: Assign a workstation or employee.

  • Cost parameter: Numeric value representing the cost per hour.

  • Hours, Minutes, Seconds: Time required for the operation.

Note: If a product variant has multiple operation steps, create separate rows for each step, repeating the variant code/SKU.

3. Save the completed template

  • Save the file in .xls or .xlsx format.

For Mac users:

  • Open the file in Numbers.

  • Go to File > Export To > Excel...

For Google Sheets users:

  • Open the file in Google Sheets.

  • Go to File > Download > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)

4. Upload the template to Katana

  • Replace existing operations: Overwrite current operations for products.

  • Add to existing operations: Append new steps to current operations.

If this is your first import, either option will yield the same result.

6. Review and confirm

  • Katana will analyze the file and highlight any errors.

  • If issues are found, correct them in the template and re-upload.

  • Once validated, click OK, go ahead to complete the import.

7. Access imported operations

  • Go to the Items screen.

  • Select a product and open the Production operations tab to view the imported data.

Additional information

  • Existing products only: Ensure all products referenced in the template already exist in Katana. Use the product import template to add new items.

  • Creating new operations/resources: If an operation or resource name doesn't match existing entries in Katana, new ones will be created upon import.

  • Cost parameter: Accepts numeric input with either a comma or dot as the decimal separator. The base currency set in Katana will be used.

  • Time fields: Minutes and seconds can exceed 60; Katana will automatically convert them (e.g., 90 minutes becomes 1 hour and 30 minutes).

  • Advanced Manufacturing add-on: If enabled, an additional column for Operation type will appear in the template.
