In Katana, assigning batch numbers to manufactured products ensures complete traceability from production to sales. You can assign a batch number and expiry date to products made with a manufacturing order (MO). This gives you the possibility to track the exact items when they are sold or used in manufacturing as a subassembly.

You can assign a batch number to products on the MO while it's open or when completing it.

When batch tracking is enabled for a product, you must assign a batch number to the manufactured products. You cannot complete a MO before assigning a batch number.

If you track batch numbers for ingredients, you will be asked to select ingredients from specific batches when completing the MO. This gives you full traceability from purchasing to manufacturing to sales. Read more

Assigning batch numbers to manufacturing products

  1. To assign a batch number to an open MO, click on the Batch # Edit button found on the MO.

If you a batch number wasn't added before completing a MO, you'll be asked to assign one when changing the MO production status to Done or Partially complete

Batch numbers can't be edited after a MO is partially complete. If you need to change the batch number, you'll need to first revert the MO. Read more

Note: If you make a product that is batch-trackable, and the MO doesn't have a batch number assigned β€” when you complete all the Production Operation steps for the MO from the Shop Floor App, the Production status for the MO will remain as Work in progress. In this case, you need to complete the MO directly in Katana (not the app) by changing the production status of the MO to Done. At this point, you will be asked to assign a batch number.

  2. Enter a Batch # (required).

The entire quantity of the product on the MO must be assigned to the same batch. You cannot split the MO into multiple batches.

You can either create a new batch number or assign products to an existing batch for the same product variant.

  3. Enter an Expiration date (optional). From this view, an expiration date can be assigned to newly created batches or edited for an existing batch.

  4. Click Confirm to add the batch number info to the MO.

Assigning batch numbers if MOs are bulk completed

If you complete multiple manufacturing orders for products from the Make screen, you'll be asked to assign batch numbers to all MOs for products that have batch tracking, but no batch number assigned.

Bulk completing manufacturing orders that still need batch #s added to products

If a batch number was already assigned to an MO before completing it, the list will not include it. If you need to edit the batch info on one of these MOs, head to its MO card.

Assign batch numbers and expiry dates (optionally) to all rows and click Confirm.

Note: If you are tracking batches for any ingredients used on Manufacturing orders, then completing the MOs in bulk is not possible. You must select batches for ingredients on each MO separately.
